Page Six Grange Opposes September Primary By MARY LUNDELL Three years ago the voters of Oregon defeated a bill similar to the September Primary bill recently passed by the state legislature. It is strange that a legislative body, rep resenting a people who defeated a change in the May primary more than two and a half to one, will take the liberty to force such a law upon its electors. We believe that the bill should be defeated for the following reasons: 1. The people will have no right of choice for the nomination of the president or vice-president of the United States. 2. It takes away the voters' right to elect a national commiteeman or committeewoman for Oregon. 3. The change in primary dates will handicap a candidate of aver age circumstances. Only a man of wealth can use publicity by mail, newspapers, and radio. A wealthy man can use air transportation and hire any number of assistants. A man of average means whose inter ests are those of Mr. and Mrs. Av erage American, would be greatly handicapped by a short time in de veloping his publicity. 4. It would make it almost im possible for an independent candi date to run for office. Occasionally we may prefer an independent to a party candidate, and it is a voter's privilege. 5. We have had from May to No vember to study the qualifications of a candidate. A September primary coming during the farmer's busiest season, would not permit sufficient time to learn the qualifications of a candidate as approximately 20 days for report of counties to file their votes and an additional 25 of the 54 to 61 days will be used in printing a Voters' Pamphlet. 6. As we said before, September is one of the busiest times of the year for rural folk and laborers so that thousands of persona would be kept from the polls. May is a much preferred date for the laborer. 7. J Heppner make it almost impossible to con test a disputed election as time would not permit 8. There has been a tendency among political groups to destroy our primary election. This change of dates and shortening of time is but a step in that direction. Petitions will soon be in the hands of various grange masters and com mittees. We are asking your assist ance and signature to have this Sep tember bill changed to May. We must defend out primary law from those who would return to the old convention system. Willows Grange News Once again Willows grange bal loted on a building site. By a ma jority vote, Cecil was chosen, pend ing the granting of a clear title to the orot)ertv in question in a reas onably short time. A committee was atroointed to care for the financial end of the building project, and an other to select the type of building best suited to our needs. At the next meeting the matured plans and reports will be submitted to the membership, and the build ing should soon be under construc tion.
